The Comprehensive Geriatric Education Program (CGEP) at the University of Kansas Medical Center is funded through a grant from the Division of Nursing, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Funded in September 2003, the program is entering the second year in a three-year funding cycle.
The CGEP promotes a train-the-trainer model of geriatric education by preparing registered nurses (RNs) as Master Mentors through an 80-hour continuing education program. As Master Mentors, these nurses facilitate and support the transfer of evidence-based clinical knowledge and skills into practice in geriatric care settings.
The CGEP offers a comprehensive curriculum, including face-to-face didactics, training over Interactive TeleVideo, practicum experiences at model facilities, and online interactive educational modules. This program is designed on adult learning principles, encouraging self-directed and team learning, critical thinking and the use of technology in teaching and learning. Communication technologies (i.e., Interactive TeleVideo and web-boards) are used to build nurse networks that reduce isolation, facilitate shared learning and provide needed consultative and collegial support. The CGEP also provides educational materials/resources to support the RN Master Mentors in their roles as educators.
