Introduction
This program was established at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2003 with federal funds totaling $2.2 million. The purpose of the program is to prepare a multidisciplinary Kansas healthcare workforce to address medical consequences that might result from exposure to biological, agroterrorist, chemical, nuclear, incendiary, other weapons of mass destruction, or public health emergencies.
The need for the program rests on a new world order. Prevention, the corner stone of public health, and an integral part of all health care, cannot be applied to biologic or chemical warfare. Prevention has been replaced by preparedness of response to attack.
This program is made possible by a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions Bioterrorism Training and Curriculum Development Program P. L. 107-188, Section 105
